mmm sugar.
Yesterday, while out running errands, Andyl and I were at BevMo just across from El Mercadito Latino in Redwood City. I decided to go in to see if they stock Coke in glass bottles made with sugar (instead of corn syrup). They do. I bought 6 @$1.19. I now have 3 left.
It’s so good. I like the glass bottle. I like the way it feels in my hand— the cold glass with condensation. I like the way it feels on my lips. I like the way it tastes; it’s crisper and less syrupy. I like how it reminds me of cokes I had in bottles in South Africa (and, to a lesser extent, Germany and Tanzania among other places).
An article about Mexican Coke vs. American Coke.
Other things that I like in glass bottles or with sugar instead of corn syrup:
- Straus Family Creamery Milk (for my cereal at work)
- heinz organic ketchup (from Pittsburgh, no less!)
- Dublin Dr. Pepper. The holy grail of sugar sodas. I bought a bunch at the Dr. Pepper Museum in Waco, Texas on my last road trip across the country.
yes, to answer your questions, I am apparently a total hippie.

please clarify the hippie comment.

Hippies eat organic stuff and don’t like their food spoiled by things like corn syrup and plastic seaping into their food.

As in says in the article about Coke, your better bet is to look for Coke that’s K for P. It’s made with cane sugar (or maybe sucrose/beet sugar), since corn is one of the forbidden grains during Passover. The 2-liter bottles look like this.
Granted, that doesn’t solve the glass vs. plastic problem, but a good pour over ice into a pint glass should deal with that nicely. If that’s unacceptable, there’s always Mexicancola.com.

hrm, point taken.
I was confused because I thought about hippies eating organic stuff like granola and eggplant and peeps. and then I kept thinking and I thought they had a distate for mega-corporate super-processed empty-calorie stuff like coke. and then I was thinking about hyperbole. also the whole sugar/glass vs corn syrup/aluminium, lesser of four evils thing.
incidentally right this second I am drinking a corn syrup coke out of an aluminum can.

It should be noted that shortly after my original comment, I made a stop at the local Superfresh for some lunch (including K for P Coke). It’s really foamy when it’s warm. And also tasty.

I shop almost exclusively at Whole Foods and I find there are three types of people that shop there: hippies, yuppies and health nuts. One doesn’t necessarily make you any of the others. As a health nut I wouldn’t drink coke no matter what kind of sweetener or type of container.

[…] It has “natural ingredients” and “no artificial flavors or colors” (that’s what the Spanish says, I think). As we know, I like my sodas sans corn syrup. […]
